DESCRIPTION

There is perhaps no greater image of steadfast love than a mother standing beneath the cross of her suffering son.

As Jesus poured Himself out for the salvation of the world, Mary remained. She could not stop the pain. She could not take away the suffering. She could not change what was unfolding before her eyes. Yet she stayed—faithful, trusting, and surrendered to the will of God even as her heart was pierced with unimaginable sorrow.

This abstract interpretation of Mary mirrors my companion piece of Jesus on the Cross. While Christ gazes outward in His sacrifice, Mary is turned in the opposite direction, inviting us into her experience of grief, trust, and surrender. Her posture reminds us that suffering is not reserved only for those carrying the cross, but also for those who stand beside it.

At the foot of Calvary, Mary teaches us what it means to remain faithful when answers are absent and pain feels overwhelming. She shows us how to trust God in the midst of heartbreak and how to continue saying "yes" even when the road before us is marked by loss.

Mother Mary, teach me to stand at the foot of the cross with courage. When suffering enters my life, help me trust as you trusted. When I cannot understand God's plan, help me remain faithful. Lead me always closer to your Son, and teach me to surrender everything into His loving hands.

"Standing by the cross of Jesus were His mother..."
