This is the most somber piece within the Colors of Mary collection, a collection of paintings that abstractly represents all the different colors of our favorite versions of Mary, the mother of God.
In this piece, titled "Queen of Sorrows", Mary is depicted in moody colors with golds and whites hazing through. The darkness symbolizes her deep hurt and suffering causes at the hands of you and me. When her son was nailed to a cross, her heart was pierced which can be seen by the piercings to her heart at the center of her chest.
My favorite thing about this painting is that it truly matches any room or decor style. Though darker in color, it still displays beautifully in a light and airy room giving a intense but still delicate statement of the Queen of Heaven in her suffering -- a suffering that, though awful, is still redemptive and beautiful.
Our Lady, Queen of Sorrows, pray for us in our suffering - that we may make our pains one with yours in the death of your Son, and that our hardships in this life will be redemptive and used to glory. Amen
