Our Lady of Sorrows: A Compassionate Heart in Suffering
My goal when painting this image of Our Lady of Sorrows was to capture the deep sorrow and compassion of the Virgin Mary in a real way.
The image portrays Mary with a heart pierced by seven swords, symbolizing the seven sorrows she endured throughout her life; from the prophecy of Simeon to the crucifixion of Christ. Her sorrowful expression reflects the immense grief of a mother who witnesses the suffering of her child, yet it is also a powerful testimony to her unwavering faith and love.
The title Our Lady of Sorrows became popular in the 13th century, especially after the Servite Order, founded in 1233, spread devotion to the Seven Dolors, or Sorrows, of Mary. The Seven Sorrows are: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the loss of the child Jesus in the Temple, Mary meeting Jesus on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion and death of Jesus, the body of Jesus being taken down from the cross, and the burial of Jesus. Each sorrow is symbolized by a sword piercing her heart, emphasizing the intense emotional and spiritual suffering she endured.
I pray that this painting of Our Lady of Sorrows invites you into a deep reflection on the pain and sacrifice of both Mary and Jesus, offering a way to unite our sufferings with Christ’s.
